Protecting the Brilliance: The Hearts & Arrows Masterclass on Jewelry Care
Share
A Hearts & Arrows diamond is a Seal of a Promise—a brilliant, symmetrical masterpiece designed to last for generations. However, even the most resilient diamonds and gold require mindful care to maintain their "electric" fire.
To ensure your Pamana remains as radiant as the day it was first worn, we have outlined the definitive, safest standards for home maintenance and professional care.
1. The Golden Rule: "Last On, First Off"
The most effective way to care for your jewelry is to minimize its exposure to daily environmental stressors.
- Last On: Apply your perfumes, lotions, and hairsprays before putting on your jewelry. These beauty products contain chemicals and oils that create a film on your diamond, dulling its scintillation.
- First Off: Remove your jewelry before bed, exercise, or household chores. Physical impact can stress the prongs, while sweat and friction can affect the polish of the gold.
2. Household Hazards: What to Avoid at All Costs
Many common household items are "silent assassins" for fine jewelry. Our stringent standards require avoiding the following:
- Chlorine & Bleach: These are the greatest threats to gold. Chlorine (found in pools and many cleaning products) leaches the base metals out of your 14K or 18K gold alloys, making the metal brittle. This can cause prongs to snap and stones to be lost.
- Abrasives (Toothpaste & Baking Soda): Never use toothpaste to clean your jewelry. While it makes your teeth shine, its abrasive particles can scratch the surface of the gold and even certain gemstones.
- Hand Sanitizer: The high alcohol content can be drying to porous stones and leave a cloudy residue on your diamonds.
3. The Safe Home Ritual: The "Mild Soak" Method
For a safe, weekly refresh that will not harm your setting or stone, follow this vetter process:
- Soak: Place your jewelry in a bowl of warm (not boiling) water mixed with a few drops of mild, fragrance-free dish soap. Avoid "ultra-strength" detergents.
- Brush: Use a new, soft-bristled baby toothbrush to gently whisk away dirt, focusing on the area underneath the diamond where oils collect.
- Rinse & Dry: Rinse thoroughly in warm water. Dry with a lint-free microfiber cloth—avoid paper towels, which can leave fibers or tiny scratches on the metal.
4. Understanding Your Jewelry Type
Different pieces require different levels of "strict" care based on their composition:
| Jewelry Type | Safe Cleaning Method | Warning |
| Natural Diamonds | Mild soap & water; Professional Ultrasonic. | Safe, but check prongs regularly for tightness. |
| Gold (14K/18K/24K) | Soft polishing cloth; Mild soap soak. | Avoid chlorine; it causes "stress corrosion" and breakage. |
| Pearls & Opals | Damp soft cloth only. | NEVER soak or use ultrasonic. They are porous and can crack. |
| Emeralds | Room temperature water; Very mild soap. | Most are oil-treated; heat or chemicals will strip their color. |
5. The Professional Promise: Our Lifetime Service
While home care keeps the surface clean, professional maintenance ensures the integrity of the "Seal of a Promise."
At Hearts & Arrows Philippines, we offer complimentary lifetime cleaning for all our pieces. Our master jewelers use professional-grade ultrasonic cleaners and steam to remove deep-seated grime that a toothbrush cannot reach. More importantly, every cleaning includes a prong inspection to ensure your diamond is secure.
The Certification Difference: Remember that while your GIA or in-house certificate validates the diamond's 4Cs, only regular maintenance preserves its light performance. A clean diamond is a brilliant diamond.
